WHIMSY BUCHMAN

Whimsy Buchman is a silly, positive Trickster who treats his  power a little like an off-duty clown treats a room: everything is an opportunity for a giggle, even when the joke doesn’t land. His chaos is controlled and focused on helping people—not by forcing happiness on them, but through silliness, disruption, tricks, and changes that create the opportunity for that giggle. Even the worst moment can “bounce”; it may go splat first, and possibly bounce back onto your head, but it can bounce.

His power is “Switching It Up”: a kind of local substitution that lets him take something that is and temporarily make it behave as though it were some nearby alternative. Taste can become another taste, color another color, a puppy a cat, one texture another, a sound an unexpected sound, an object’s superficial form another plausible form, falling can become bouncing, or something unpleasant can become something harmlessly absurd. His power naturally prefers lateral changes over escalations, and he needs something to riff on—the farther the switch gets from what was already there, the harder and less stable it becomes. Whimsy believes the rule is, “I can only switch little things.” The actual rule may ultimately be, “I can switch things into something else.”

Whimsy’s power manifests visually as colorful plastic confetti: the thin, terrible-for-the-environment kind once found in the stationery aisle with “Lisa Frank” written on it, cut into unicorns, dolphins, stars, hearts, and similar shapes. He can create the confetti deliberately, but it also has a functional relationship to changes in mass. When something large becomes smaller, the excess mass instantly appears as confetti; when something small is made larger, confetti appears when it snaps back, with the size of the “poof” depending on the change involved. And, of course, the confetti is self-cleaning, safe for all—and pets love it.

At the larger end of the same ability is “Change the Channel.” Instead of switching an object or one of its properties, Whimsy can eventually switch what reality he is currently tuned to. He does not create or rewrite those realities; he accesses and switches between things that already exist.

Whimsy is somehow related to Mr. Mxyzptlk’s kind of magical/reality-altering power, but he is not intended to be as powerful as Mxyzptlk. He is more Trickster than all-powerful. He exists as a positive force on the Trickster spectrum, and one day he will become either a Lord of Order or a Lord of Chaos. Order and Chaos are currently fighting over him.

Whimsy has absolutely no idea.

Major beats:

• The montage: during the journal montage Whimsy is seen amongst the various "color kids" that Specs saught and attempt to train with and channel. Channeling Whimsy resulted in IndiKid's staff spewing Whimsy's signature confetti. Following the Gotham bully-buster (and after Whimsy offered him a boba, for which he was too worired to ask of origion) the began their goodbyse on a nearby rooftop. Before they could say much the Batginal lit the sky drawing bother their attention. Glancing back at each other with a shared smile, IndiKid slid to Blue and took flight. As he drifted upward, he heard Whimsy saying somethig to himself as he headed in the direction of the signal, Blue could pracitally "hear" the smile: I hope I get to meet Harley this time! 

• [Canon] A moment of pride was when, after an especailly humorous encounter with some shopliters, the CEO of Macy's asked Whimsy to lead a specail late night parade as marshal. Rising up off the ground, a shock to even himself, he asked "just say when!". Turns out self-disposable, bio-degraablde, pet friendly meta-dimensional confetti is ... whimsical. But not as whimiscal as the trail of confetti leading from the east to the west cost that erupted when Whimsy discoved: he was trending and, more important: a Swift singer wants to meet... but not as much as her new brother-in-law - turns out, he was there! That's his pic!!!

Switching It Up — Local Substitution

• Can target an entire object/creature or an individual property, behavior, or outcome without otherwise changing the target.
• Switches are temporary; affected targets eventually return to their normal state.
• Does not readily create from nothing—the ability works by substituting something already present.
• Observed uses: altering taste without changing the food/drink; changing the color of his glasses; puppy → adult cat; weapon → teddy bear or boba; dangerous fall/impact → bounce.
• Physical transformations can alter size and mass, with the difference expressed through his confetti manifestation.

Power Manifestation — Confetti

• Power activation is visually accompanied by tiny, thin pieces of brightly colored plastic novelty confetti.
• Individual pieces are recognizable shapes—unicorns, dolphins, hearts, stars, moons, and similar stationery-aisle designs—not paper rectangles, streamers, glitter, generic particles, or miniature creatures.
• Confetti may appear as a few scattered pieces around a minor switch or as a larger burst associated with a substantial physical transformation.
• When a target becomes smaller, excess mass immediately manifests as confetti. When temporarily enlarged, the corresponding confetti manifests as it returns to normal.
• Can also be produced independently of a substitution.
• Self-cleaning, harmless, and pet-safe.

Operational Limits

• Effect difficulty increases with the degree of substitution, rather than following a simple object-size or power-output limit.
• Closely related substitutions are easier and more stable; increasingly dissimilar substitutions become progressively harder to maintain.
• Altering an event while it is occurring is distinct from reversing its consequences afterward: e.g., converting a dangerous impact into a bounce does not imply an ability to resurrect someone after a fatal impact.
• Whimsy currently misunderstands the full scope of this limitation, interpreting his ability as being restricted to “little things.”

Latent/Potential Ability — Change the Channel

• Not currently unlocked; Whimsy is unaware this extension of his power exists.
• Applies the substitution mechanism at the level of reality itself: changing which existing reality he is currently tuned to.
• Does not create, destroy, or rewrite realities; it switches access between realities that already exist
