Magic is the most common, frequent, and well known example of a "non-lantern lantern"; same premise as a latnern, different kind of ring.
The Shadow - Examples: Raven(DC), Shade, Nightshade, Phantom Girl (YJ:P) - access The Void via the Shadowland or simliiar; "Shadoweavers" or "Shadowdancers" have more control over the shadow than it's entity, allowing them to give shadow form where he, the enity of Shadow, can not. (see: RoG)
